Quite soon language students notice they understand more and more of the language surrounding them. They can distinguish and understand separate words. But for a long time it remains difficult to start speaking themselves. This is normal. Children as well understand a lot more before they start speaking!

You cannot learn the language just by studying your books. It is important that you expose yourself as much as possible to the language. For instance by watching Dutch television, by listening to Dutch radio or by reading Dutch newspapers. And of course, you should start speaking as well. The problem is, the Dutch often respond in English if the hear an accent. Then it is difficult to keep on speaking Dutch.

A lot of foreigners with Dutch partners find it extremely difficult to switch over to speaking Dutch. They are used to communicate in another language with their partner. It feels strange to speak Dutch. But it is important for them to use their language skills as much as possible. Only then they can really master the language.
